10 Kargil War Heroes and Stories of their extraordinary courage

When entire nation sleeps in peace, there are men out there who are guarding our territory with their courage and passion that is larger than life itself. It's been eighteen long years since we have won Kargil war in 1999 so today on Kargil Vijay Divas 2018 out of respect; we are dedicating this piece to the brave soldiers who lost their life in the war during crucial Operation Vijay. Some stories and sacrifices need to be told over and over again to commemorate the contribution by Indian Armed Forces. On this day, July 26, every year we honour the Kargil War's Heroes for their valor and spirit. Wars are inevitable and so are their consequences, soldiers standing head held high in harshest of conditions to protect their country is devotion in itself. Let's salute those heroes of the Kargil war who helped us to win the war.

1. Captain Vikram Batra

Vikram Batra belonged to Himachal and this daring soldier helped in capturing the crucial peak pint 5140 during Kargil war and as the Captain of his Delta Company, he toppled many enemies' post but he later succumbed to his injuries. He was honored with Param Vir Chakra later on.

2. Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey

An avid sportsperson, Manoj Kumar Pandey made great contribution for the nation by clearing Jubar Top in Kargil War which was an important point for Indian Army at that time. He alongwith his troops showed exceptional courage but the nation lost him so he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.

3. Naib Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav

Yogendra Singh Yadav belonged to Uttar Pradesh and he helped Indian Army to capture three bunkers on Tiger Hill by leading the pack right to the top of cliff at a height of 16,500 feet. He was awarded Param Vir Chakra for his courage.

4. Captain Vijyant Thapar

A young soldier of just 22 lost his life in Kargil war while he was leading with his infantry regiment, 2 Rajputana Rifles on 29 June, 1999. The President of India awarded Param Vir Chakra to him posthumously.

5. Major Padmapani Acharya

Major Padmapani Acharya's 2nd Rajoutana Rifles was given the task to capture bunker at Tololing Top so after consistent grueling battle, he captured the enemy post and breathed his last after the completion of task.

6. Capt. N. Kenguruse

Captain Neikezhakou Kenguruse was a part of "Operation Vijay" during Kargil War and he volunteered for commando mission where he struggled in 10 degree Celsius temperature to make way for his platoon at a height of 16,000 feet.

7. Rifleman Sanjay Kumar

Rifleman Sanjay Kumar captured Area Flat Top on the 4th of July, 1999 but as soon as he reached to the top, enemies started firing after which rifleman Kumar went ahead and killed three soldiers.

8. Capt. Anuj Nayyar

Capt. Anuj Nayyar also lost his life in Kargil War and he was just 24 then. His mission during the war was to capture Point 4875, known as Pimple 2. The brave soldier killed 9 Pakistani soldiers and destroyed three enemy bunkers and lost his life while clearing the fourth bunker for his platoon.

9. Major Ajay Singh Jasrotia

Major Jasrotia who was known as Rambo during his school days lost his life in the Kragil War during Operation Vijay while recapturing Point 5140. During the operation, he was badly wounded but he saved the lives of six Indian soldiers. He was later awarded Sena Medal for his bravery.

10. Capt. Saurabh Kalia- Captured

One of the tragic episodes of the Kargil War was Capt. Saurabh Kalia's story who was captured by Pakistan Army while he was engaged in firing on enemy. He alongwith his soldiers were taken as prisoners and were subjected to third degree torture for 22 days after which their mutilated bodies were sent back to India.
