Piyush Goyal gets interim charge of finance in Cabinet reshuffle, Rathore replaces Smriti Irani at I&B

Piyush Goyal will also take over the corporate affairs portfolio held by Arun Jaitley , who underwent a kidney transplant surgery, while Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore will replace Smriti Irani as information and broadcasting minister

NEW DELHI: Railways minister Piyush Goyal was temporarily given additional charge of the Union finance ministry in a Cabinet reshuffle announced late on Monday, the eve of the Karnataka election results. Minister of state Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore will take over from Smriti Irani as information and broadcasting minister, a release from Rashtrapati Bhavan said.

Goyal will also take over the corporate affairs portfolio held by Arun Jaitley , who underwent a kidney transplant surgery on Monday. The release said Goyal will hold the portfolios while Jaitley is indisposed.

Irani will continue to hold the textiles portfolio. Minister of state for drinking water and sanitation SS Ahluwalia has been moved to the electronics and information technology ministry at the same rank. Alphons Kannanthanam was relieved of the portfolio.

Jaitley had confirmed his illness on Twitter on April 6 after undergoing a battery of tests.

"I am being treated for kidney-related problems & certain infections that I have contracted," Jaitley had tweeted last month.

Government sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Jaitley, hours before he underwent the kidney transplant. They said Modi was in touch with Jaitley's family to get updates on his health throughout the day.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday too wished Jaitley a speedy recovery.

"I'm happy to hear that Jaitley ji's kidney transplant surgery today at AIIMS went well. I wish him a speedy recovery," Gandhi tweeted.
