Burhan Wani and his gang is just a history now

SRINAGAR: In June 2015, a picture which had Burhan Wani, the face of Kashmir's new age militancy alongwith 10 young militants went viral on internet. The group inspired many to join militancy due to their tech-savvy attitude.

As per the police reports, Burhan attracted around 30 youth from Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam belt of southern Kashmir into militancy. The number rose to 50 in a year for the militancy recruitment; basically the whole South Kashmir was taken by the news trend of young boys joining militancy.

But with the death of Burhan in a house in Bomdooru in Kokernag area of Anantnag district on July 8, 2016, the security forces had succeeded in catching the big fish which was then followed by various strategies to catch and kill Burhan's associates.

The other militants in the picture included Saddam Paddar, Adil Khanday, Naseer Pandit, Afaq Bhat, Sabzar Bhat, Anees, Ishfaq Dar, Waseem Mallah, Wasim Shah and Tariq Pandit, all were killed except Pandit and Paddar till May 6. As of now, Pandit is in jail and Saddam Paddar was the only surviving militant of the group.

IGP Muneer Khan while addressing a press conference last year in Srinagar confirmed that all the people in the photograph were killed except Saddam Paddar.

Paddar was later caught multiple times and escaped. But at last, security forces got hold of Saddam Paddar, who along with four other militants were hiding in a house at Imam Sahib village of Shopian.

DGP S P Vaid said that catching Saddam was a big achievement for putting an end to the whole youth militancy wave.
