Root out crime against women: Sodhi

JAMMU: Commodore D.S Sodhi (Retd) on Monday while decrying the practice of dowry, female infanticide, discrimination towards a girl child and domestic violence, asked people to root out these social evils from the society.

He said that Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a testimony to the fact that injustice is still being done to the girl child.

He also raised the issue of functioning of State Women's Commission by projecting that the Chairperson of Commission has recently stated that Commission has very limited resources and accordingly cannot attend to every single case of rights infringement.

"There is a need to prioritize cases for selecting most deserving ones. A key function of the Commission is therefore to operate a filtering mechanism and escalate only those cases which are most deserving and would therefore benefit from the Commission's intervention", he quoted her and expressed concern as to how the Chairperson of the Commission would decide such prioritisation and the parameters, if any, for the number of cases to be picked up for consideration. "It is a matter of interest to know who decides the prioritization, the Chairperson or the Commission including all members", he said and requested her to clarify the stance.

He also requested NGOs, other organizations as well as Rotary Clubs of Jammu and Kashmir to come forward and work towards spreading awareness for eradication of the malaise of crimes against women and other social evils.

Mehak Kaur Sodhi, Post Graduate in Criminology and Social Justice from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, Robin Singh Mehta, KAS and Sanjeev Vaid, former President, Rotary Club of Jammu City were also present.
