Prof. Amitabh Mattoo delivers lecture at MIER

JAMMU: Prof. Amitab Mattoo, Hon'ble Advisor to the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir delivered the H.L. Gupta Memorial Lecture for the year 2018 on the topic "The Challenge of Building a Knowledge Society in Jammu and Kashmir" at Model Institute of Education and Research today. Dignitaries present on the occasion were Dr. Arun K Gupta Chairperson MIER, Dr. Renu Gupta, Vice-Chairperson, Dr. Adit Gupta Director and Dr. N.R Sharma Dean Academics along with distinguished Educationists, Principals of different colleges, Members of the Governing Body and civil society and faculty and students of MIER College of Education.

The function commenced with floral homage to late H.L. Gupta, the founder of MIER Group of Institutions by the dignitaries. Dr. Arun K. Gupta, Chairperson MIER extended a hearty welcome to the distinguished speaker and eminent guests on the occasion. He expressed his gratitude to all the eminent dignitaries present for sparing their valuable time and gracing the occasion. Dr. Gupta hoped that the lecture would be a befitting tribute to the great educationist, H.L. Gupta. He said that the knowledge has always been a factor of production, and a driver of economic and social development and the emergence of the knowledge society is bringing about a fundamental reshaping of the global economy. The idea of ‘knowledge society' has certainly caught the attention of the urban elite but the masses are still struggling for their basic needs of food, shelter, drinking water, toilets, electricity and healthcare even after six decades of independence and in spite of a plethora of schemes for welfare, well-being and empowerment.

A brief life sketch of Shri H.L Gupta was presented by Dr. Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson MIER. She enlightened the audience about Shri H.L. Gupta who was a veteran educationist and an emancipated social activist. He was also a noted public figure and a pioneer of private enterprise in education in J&K State and was instrumental in shaping the MIER Group of Institutions. Dr. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal MIER College of Education introduced the distinguished speaker as an eminent educationist and a teacher par excellence of international repute. He also highlighted the various achievements of Prof. Mattoo for the benefit of the audience.

Prof. Mattoo commenced his lecture by paying glowing tributes to H.L. Gupta whom he described as a role model and an inspiring mentor. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Matto said a knowledge society generates, shares and makes available to all members of the society, knowledge that may be used to improve the human condition. He elaborated upon the pillars of the knowledge society which include: ideas, the fourth industrial revolution and human capital. He deliberated upon how India survived and succeeded as a democracy its functioning after independence. He highlighted that even though there are many challenges in creating knowledge society in the state of J&K, we can capitalize on youth that constitute 60-70% of the population of the state who could be channelized across boundaries in strengthening and reshaping economic frontiers.

A book titled "Implementing Inclusion in Schools" was also released on this occasion. The book has been edited by Dr. Arun K Gupta, Dr. Renu Gupta and Dr. Bharti Tandon. An attempt has been made in the book to connect theoretical framework with practicing strategies and global trends in inclusive education in addition to highlighting challenges and issues. The book brings together contribution from eminent scholars not only from India but also from U.S. and Brazil. This book is a valuable resource for professionals and practitioners in the field of Special Education.

Prof. N.R. Sharma, Dean Academics MIER College, formally thanked the distinguished speaker, the chief guest and the eminent personalities present on the occasion and said that in order to effectively implement reforms in creating knowledge society; we need to incorporate innovative practices, community-based activities and out-of-box thinking. Dr. Annie Koul, Convener IQAC MIER ably conducted the program.
