J&K Climber Shivani selected for Asian Games

JAMMU: Ace climber from Jammu and Kashmir, Shivani Charak has been selected Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) to represent India in the 18th Asian Games to be held at Jakarta-Palenbang in Indonesia in September.

On her return home from Delhi where she underwent selection process, Shivani was felicitated today in a joint function organised by Mountaineering Association of J&K and Tawi Trekkers J&K.

While chief guest on the occasion, Ashwani Sharma (former MLA) presented bouquet to Shivani, the other dignitaries including Zorawar Singh Jamwal (Secretary general, Press Club Jammu), Prem Sadotra (general secretary, J&K High Court Bar Association), Haji Abdul Qayoom (Chief Sports Officer of J&K State Sports Council) and Rahul Sharma (Chairman, Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Bantalab, Jammu) garlanded the champion climber. All of them wished her a grand success in the forthcoming Asian Games.

While congratulating Shivani for her selection in the Indian team, Ram Khajuria, general secretary of Mountaineering Association of J&K lauded her achievements which led to her selection in the Indian team. He told the gathering that besides five gold medals in the last two years in the North Zone Competitions she had bagged three Silver medals in the National competition in 2016 followed by two gold and one Silver medal in 2017.

She was also deputed for training to three European countries Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia before her participation in the World Cup in Sport Climbing at Navi Mumbai in June, 2017.

Shivani, being only 17 years old at present has a long career ahead of her and the Association is confident that she will surely get into the Olympics in the year 2020 at Tokyo, Japan, he said.

Khajuria told the gathering that Shivani Charak is the 4th person from J&K during the last 70 years to participate in the Asian Games. Out of the three other sports persons who have participated in the Asian Games earlier, two had been trained by Indian Army as they were serving in armed forces. On the other hand Shivani is the product of Mountaineering Association of J&K and it was her personal grit, determination and hard work that has led to her outstanding achievement.

He also thanked all the people who have supported Shivani during her journey to the top position especially the management of Sprawling Buds ICSE School who have provided the necessary infrastructure to the Association and the J&K State Sports Council which has been sponsoring the local, zonal and national sport climbing competitions besides coaching camps outside the state.

Khajuria promised that the Association would provide all the required facilities and sponsorship regarding her preparations for the prestigious Asian Games.

He disclosed that the matter regarding technical support and proper training to Shivani at various international climbing walls in the country is being finalized by the Association in consultation with the Secretary J&K State Sports Council Waheed ur Rehman Parra who is very keen to ensure best possible facilities to her so that she can bring laurels to the state and the country by winning a medal in the Asian Games.
