Public talk organized at Jammu University

JAMMU: Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, University of Jammu organised a public talk on 'Situating Chandals and Dooms in the Early Medieval Social Order of Kashmir' by Prof. Shaym Narain Lal, Department of History, University of Jammu.

In his address Prof. Shaym Narain Lal stressed that system of untouchability emerged with early caste system in India and was practiced with varying degree everywhere and also their relation with Brahmins was different at different places. Chandals were originally aboriginal tribes having their own dialects. By 3rd century B.C. they were pushed to the margins and those who came in contact with them also had to forgo their class and status in the society.

Rajtarangni has details about the Chandals and Dooms who in Kashmir during medieval period were not considered out cast. He gave an impressive account of narratives related to that period.

Prof. Anita Billawaria, Dean, Social Sciences was the chief guest on the occasion. She appreciated the efforts of the Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy to organize such interactions which encourage the young scholars to get abreast with the status and conditions of the marginal in the society.

Earlier Prof. Jasbir Singh, Director, Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy welcomed the guest and audience and presented a detail report of the works undertaken by the Centre. Dr. Anupama Vohra introduced the speaker of the day.

The function was attended by Prof. Neeru Sharma, Prof. Suman Jamwal, Prof. Vishav Raksha, Dr. Aroon Sharma, Dr. Anju Thappa, Dr. Sunita Sharama, Dr. Hema Gandotra and Dr. Virender Koudal, Rahul Koundal,Shahnawaz, Shagun, Shiv Dutt and a galaxy of research scholars and students from different department of the University attended the function.
