'Let Renuka Chowdhury ji laugh... haven't heard such laughter since Ramayana serial': PM Modi in Parliament

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lashed out at the Congress party while replying to the debate in both the houses of Parliament on the Motion of Thanks for the President's address. During an address to the Rajya Sabha, the PM also took a dig at Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury who laughed out loud during his speech.

Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu then asked 63-year-old Chowdhury to maintain discipline while the Prime Minister was addressing. "What happened to you," Naidu asked Chowdhury, asserting that "unruly behaviour and loose talk" would not be allowed. The PM, however, interrupted and said, "Sabhapati ji meri aapse vinti hai Renuka Ji ko kuch mat kahiye. Ramayan serial ke baadaisi hansi sunne ka saubhagya aaj jaake mila hai. (Chairman Sir, I request you to not say anything to Renukaji. After Ramayan (TV) serial, we have got the privilege of hearing this kind of laughter only today). To this, the BJP leaders in Parliament burst into laughter, while Chowdhury was stunned into silence.

Later, Chowdhury refused to respond to the PM's remarks, saying he has denigrated the status of a woman. "PM made a personal remark, what else do you expect from him? I can't fall to that level to reply to him. This is actually called denigrating the status of a woman," news agency quoted Chowdhury as saying. She also told reporters: "What more can you expect from him? It is established that the BJP is against women. When I laughed, it hurt because it was the laughter of truth."

Responding to Chowdhury's statement, Union Minister Smriti Irani said: "I was present there. I heard the kind of indecent remarks she was making on PM Modi. Is it justified that she makes indecent remarks and when those remarks are met sarcastically she makes her gender her shield?"

Recently, Renuka Chowdhury had hit out at the BJP for taking potshots at Rahul Gandhi's jacket which the Congress president wore at a music event in Shillong. The BJP had returned the "suit-boot" jibe, saying: "So @OfficeOfRG, soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with 'black' money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! Your indifference mocks us!"

Row over Rahul Gandhi's Burberry jacket not over yet; BJP leader sends Rs 700 to Congress' Renuka Chowdhury

Chowdhury had laughed off the BJP's claims and said that she could get the same jacket for Rs 700 for Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he wants, adding: "Only I don't have his measurements other than chappan inch chaati (56-inch chest)."
