Record performance by State fencers

JAMMU: A young batch of fencers has established a new record of medals won in the National School Games and other national level events held in the recent past thereby brought laurels to the state.

In the just concluded 63rd School Nationals, organised by School Games Fedeation of India (SGFI), at Nalgonda in Hyderabad, J&K team secured two medals in team events and other three in individual competition. Similarly, in other national events, Riya Bakshi clinched girls first ever individual silver in Junior National Championship held at Bangalore.

The young team of school boys and girls performed well winning highest ever medals. While boys (Mayank Sharma, Lakshaya Sharma, Abhijay Sindhu, Surayansh Sharma) clinched gold in under-17 Sabre the girls (Danushi Sharma, Mehak Choudhary, Priyanka and another girls from Reasi) finished third in Epee event of the same age group.

In individual category, Kritarthy Kotwal won gold in under-17 Sabre event while Mayank bagged silver in under-17 Sabre and Tanmay finished third (bronze) in under-14 Foil event.

In the meantime, all these medal winners were also invited by the Director Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) for introduction and interaction.

Meanwhile, in other National competitions, Riya Bakshi has created history by become first female fencer to win an individual Silver medal in Foil event in the Junior Nationals held at Bangalore. Subsequently, she has been selected for preparatory India camp for upcoming Junior Asians and Asian Games.

Another upcoming fencer, Rudra Pratap Singh has also won Silver in Sabre event in Sub-Junior National held at Gwalior. He has also been invited for the India camp.

The school nationals team was accompanied by Ujjwal Gupta and Anthony Matoo as coaches while Joginder (PEM) was manager.
