Kohli named ICC's cricketer and captain of the year

NEW DELHI: India's Virat Kohli hit a windfall at the ICC awards after being named cricketer of the year, ODI player of the year and captain of the year as well, in both formats. Australia's Steven Smith took home the other big prize as he was recognised as the best Test player of 2017.

"It means a lot to me to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for becoming the ICC cricketer of the Year 2017 and also ODI player of the year. I won that in 2012 as well, but this is the first time I'm winning the Sir Garfield Sobers trophy and that's a huge honour for me," Kohli said. It's probably the biggest award that we have in world cricket. Two Indians getting it back to back makes it more special. Last time it was Ashwin, this time I'm getting it."

Steven Smith spoke in similar glowing terms about his award: "It's a great honour to win the Test player of the year award. It's called Test cricket for a reason and I' very humbled to win that award. I think I scored six hundreds in the year and more importantly it led the team to an Ashes victory which is something very important for me. I love playing Test cricket and its a game that challenges the skills and the mind the most.
