Mahesh, Riya emerge winner in Sport Climbing

JAMMU: Mahesh Singh of Residential School for Blind Roop Nagar and Riya of Louis Braille Memorial Residential School for Sightless Girls emerged victorious in the boys and girls category respectively in the competition for visually challenged.

In other category of specially abled Anil and Roshi Devi of JRC School for Handicapped, Udheywala clinched the titles in the boys and girls category respectively in the 1st Open J&K State Sport Climbing Championship concluded at Sprawling Buds ICSE School here today.

Second and third positions in the boys and girls categories of the visually challenged and specially categories were however, bagged by Azam Khan and Wasim Akram and Bhumika and Mehak respectively.

A total of about 70 climbers including 20 girls of JRC Home for Handicapped, Udheywala, Residential School for Blind Roop Nagar and Louis Braille Memorial Residential School for sightless, Roop Nagar participated in the day-long competition which was fully sponsored by Takshila Educational Trust, Jammu which governs Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Jammu.

Shawetica Khajuria, an international judge in Sport Climbing was the President of Jury of the competition who was well supported by local technical personnel. Logistic support was, however, provided by IMF North None Committee, New Delhi. Sonam Sidharth, a senior climber and an Executive member of Mountaineering Association of J&K was the organizing secretary of the competition.

In the valedictory function, Secretary J&K State Sports Council, Waheed Ur Rehman Parra was the chief guest who along with guests of honour Shiv Kumar Sharma, Joint Secretary and Ravi Singh, Divisional Sports Officer of J&K State Sports Council; Zorawar Singh Jamwal, secretary general Press Club, Jammu; Prem Sadotra, general secretary J&K High Court Bar Association Jammu; Arti Sharma, Principal and Rahul Sharma, chairman of Sprawling Buds ICSE School distributed medals and mementoes to the winners and participating institutions.

The Secretary Sports Council also distributed certificates to the climbers who had successfully completed their basic and advance mountaineering courses. He exhorted the climbers to prepare for the next Asian Games in 2018 and Olympics in 2020 in which Sport Climbing is now one of the disciplines. The State Sports Council would support them fully in their preparation for the international events, he assured.

Ram Khajuria expressed his gratitude to the management of Sprawling Buds ICSE School for providing the necessary infrastructure. He also thanked the J&K State Sports Council for sponsorship of various activities of the Association.

Prominent among others present were Shashi Kant, Sakshi Magotra, Manik Slathia, Ambreen Fatima, Deepika Dutta, Shivani Charak and Mrityunjay Sharma, both international climbers, Arun Singh, Shilpa Charak, Ajay Singh and Sunil Chakharia and Satish Bhan, a senior sports organizer.
