A to Z about the inspiring cricketer, Mahendra Singh Dhoni

The Indian cricket board has nominated Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the country's third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to the game. MS Dhoni has been one of the greatest names in the game of cricket. A : Also known as Mahi

B : Born on July 7, 1981 in a Hindu Rajput family in Ranchi, Bihar (Now in Jharkand)

Dhoni is popularly known as the captain cool and is rated amongst the best captains. He became the first captain to win all three ICC limited-overs trophies (World Cup, Champions Trophy and the World Twenty20). In 2009, Dhoni captaincy skills led the Indian team to number one position for the first time in the ICC Test rankings and with time under his captaincy, India became the first team in more than 40 years to whitewash Australia in a Test series. He has kept himself composed and cool in the most stressful times.

D : Debut

Till 1998 Dhoni, who was in class 12th in school, had played only school cricket and club cricket and no professional cricket. MS Dhoni made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar in the 1999-2000. Dhoni's performance impressed many throughout including in Deodhar Trophy and in the Duleep Trophy. In was in 2003/04 he debut the one day format and was picked for the India A squad for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya.

MS Dhoni's father Pan Singh worked in junior management positions in MECON. Dhoni has a sister Jayanti Gupta and a brother Narendra Singh Dhoni. His wife name is Sakshi Singh Rawat and they both are parents to a baby girl named Ziva.

G : Gloomy Captaincy Times

In December 2009 Dhoni was banned for two ODI matches against Sri Lanka by ICC match referee Jeff Crowe as India was three overs short of the specified rate. In January 2012 Dhoni was banned for the fourth Test match against Australia in Adelaide as India was two overs short during the third Test in Perth. In the CB Series Dhoni faced a one match ban for slow-over rate against Australia.

  • First wicket-keeper to effect 150 stumping dismissals in three forms of the game(combined ODI, test and T20I) .

  • Dhoni is the first Indian wicket-keeper to complete 4,000 Test runs.
  • First Indian and fifth overall to hit 200 sixes in ODIs.
  • Ms Dhoni is the only captain to win all ICC tournament cups.
  • Holds the record of hitting the maximum international sixes as captain.

J : Jovial Side

Most of Dhoni's colleagues term Dhoni as a very honest and a straightforward person but very few know his jovial and playful side to his persona. While he was serving as a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) at Kharagpur railway station he was staying at the railway quarters and one fine day, Dhoni and a couple of his friends covered themselves in white bedsheets and walked around in the complex late in the night making a fooling everyone into believing that there were ghosts moving around in the complex.

K : Keen admirer of Adam Gilchrist. His childhood idols were cricket teammate Sachin Tendulkar, Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan and singer Lata Mangeshkar.

N : Not so good times were faced by his family when India unexpectedly crashed out the World Cup after losses to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in 2007 Cricket World Cup, his house was attacked, smashed  by political activists and were provided police protection.

  • Dhoni is a Co-owner of Ranchi Rays, Ranchi based Hockey club Ranchi Rays, a franchise of the Hockey India League.
  • He is also the Co-owner of Chennaiyin FC, Chennai based Football club Chennaiyin FC, a franchise of the Indian Super League.
  • His interest in bikes led him co-parternered Akkineni Nagarjuna in buying a Supersport World Championship team Mahi Racing Team India.
