10 things to know about India's 14th President, Ram Nath Kovind

The 14th President of India is a lawyer-turned-politician who is country's second Dalit to occupy such highest position after garnering 65.6 % votes in the Electoral College. Here are some interesting facts about him:

1. Ram Nath Kovind, the 14th President Elect of the Republic of India was born on 1st October, 1945 at Village Paraunkh, Derapur, United Provinces, British India (now in Uttar Pradesh, India).

2. Kovind belongs to Dalit community and after his elementary school education; he used to walk around six kilometers away to Khanpur village to attend junior school. Later he did his Bachelor's degree in commerce and LLB from DAV College which is affiliated with Kanpur University.

3. After completing his law degree, he moved to Delhi to prepare for civil services examination. He stayed in Delhi, prepared for the exam and finally passed that on his third attempt, but he did not join civil services as he was selected for an allied service instead of IAS, thus started practicing law in Delhi.

4. In the year 1977, Kovind became the personal secretary to the then Prime Minister Morarji Desai during the Janata government.

5. He joined BJP in 1991 and served as national spokesperson of the party; after which he contested elections from Ghatampur and Bhognipur (both in Uttar Pradesh) assembly constituencies on the BJP ticket but unfortunately lost both elections following which he never contested again.

6. In the year 1994, he became a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh and served the state for around twelve years right from 1994-2006.

7. He has also been on the Board of management of Dr. B.R Ambedkar University, Lucknow and on the Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta. Kovind has also represented India at the United Nations General Assembly in October 2002.

8. In the year 2015, he was appointed as the Governor of Bihar where he served until filing nominations for the post of President of India.

9. Ram Nath Kovind's family includes his wife, Savita Kovind, son (Prashant Kumar) and his daughter (Swati).

10. On 20th July, 2017 Ram Nath Kovind was elected as the 14th President of India
