Dearth of Parking lots in Jammu
Oct 17, 2016
Parking space in Jammu has always been a pain for the citizens. The authorities despite many promises failed to construct parking spaces for the people. Several projects were started in the beginning but none ever came to fruition. Contracts were given but nobody kept a check on them in spite of repeated delays.
In Jammu city, going by statistics, there are about lakhs of vehicles on roads for which parking lots need to be created. Although some malls do have their own parking spaces but there also, the capacity is quite insufficient.
Now, with the mushrooming of shops, complexes, restaurants etc. there is an urgent need to create space for parking vehicles as going by usual habits, roads get blocked which result into unnecessary chaos on the roads.
The parking spaces have become a constraint and over all these years nothing concrete has been done about it. The authorities need to formulate a fool proof plan to solve this problem of traffic congestion as soon as possible.
Foundation stone for six-storey mega multi-level parking complex at the existing General Bus Stand, Jammu was laid down by the former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and people of the city had great hopes from the same. Multiple debates and deliberations were done, the plans to provide a different space to all the shopkeepers present at the existing General Bus Stand were made and they also promised to extend full support for the construction of the project. But as of now, nothing has been executed.
More stringent actions need to be taken to ensure the implementation of proposed projects.
Most busy areas of the city include Parade, Shalamar, Purani Mandi, and Raghunath Bazaar; include Jain Bazaar, Panjtirthi, BC Road, High Court road and Canal Road. The administration must take strict action against the violators to teach a lesson to them and start the work at the earliest.
