JU begins Gender Sensitization Workshop Series

JAMMU: The Centre for Women's Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Statistics, University of Jammu organized a Gender Sensitization workshop for the PG students of the department.

Dr. Hema Gandotra, faculty, Department of Sociology, University of Jammu was the resource person.

This workshop was planned under the able guidance and vision of Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women's Studies.

At the very outset, Dr. Saranjit Kaur, Faculty, Centre for Women's Studies. welcomed the participants and introduced the Resource person. She also briefed about the working of the Centre and explained the objective behind the conduct of such workshops.

Dr. Hema Gandotra the key speaker for the workshop spoke about the concept of gender, and how it is seen and perceived in our day-to-day life. She averred that how Patriarchy as an ideology has created unequal power structures in the form of power differences and inequality in various spheres.

She also gave a detailed presentation on how gender is constructed and ideas about masculinity and femininity are built and perceived in society by quoting various examples.

She also shared her personal experiences while defining some of the stereotypical roles and expectations of males and females in the patriarchal society. Further while interacting with the students she also stressed how through constant dialogue and discourses a space can be created and positive change can be brought in society.

Prof. Parmil Kumar Head, Department of Statistics gave insights on the concept of sex and gender and emphasized that sex is a biological explanation of being male and female whereas gender is acquired through culture, traditions etc. He also said that gender sensitivity modifies behaviour and is required at all levels to create gender equality in society.

A large number of participants comprising students, scholars and faculty members of the Statistics department attended the workshop. The workshop was very keenly attended by the participants who actively took part in the interaction that followed the presentation.

The participants raised many queries on issues like equality, Gender neutrality, Gender identity, etc and were answered to their satisfaction by the Resource person.

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, faculty, Centre for Women's Studies who also presented the formal vote of thanks. Ms Poonam Sharma and the office staff of the statistics department looked after the digital modalities of the workshop.
